A French international explains his two rejections of Manchester United, admitting the move “really could have happened.”

Marseille midfielder Adrien Rabiot has opened up about rejecting Manchester United not once, but twice, despite serious interest from the Premier League giants in back-to-back seasons.

In an interview with The Athletic, the French international confirmed that United made formal offers in both 2023 and 2024, but he ultimately walked away from the move due to concerns over the club’s direction and on-field struggles.

“It really could have happened two years ago,” Rabiot said. “When my contract at Juventus was close to ending, United made a move. We had great talks, there were official offers, but I decided to extend for one more year with Juve.”

According to Rabiot, the Red Devils returned for his signature in 2024 once he became a free agent. Despite another round of promising discussions, the 29-year-old once again declined to make the switch.

“Last year as well, when I was free, they came back in again. We spoke again, but it was tricky. I had some doubts about where the club was heading. They’re in a bit of a hole right now. I wasn’t sure they were ready to achieve big things again.”

After leaving Juventus, Rabiot opted for a return to Ligue 1, joining Olympique Marseille — a bold move given his past with Paris Saint-Germain.

Andy Cole Believes United Missed Out

Interestingly, United legend Andy Cole was among those who publicly backed the idea of bringing Rabiot to Old Trafford on a free transfer. Speaking to Betfred in 2024, Cole praised the midfielder’s career trajectory and expressed belief that he would’ve been a valuable asset.

“I remember watching him at Manchester City when he was a kid,” Cole said. “He’s the same age as my son and even back then, you could tell he was special. He’s done well at Juventus, he’s a regular in the French national team — and that’s no small thing given how much talent they have in midfield.”

“If you can get someone like Rabiot for free, why wouldn’t you take that opportunity? He’d definitely improve United and bring something they’re lacking.”

Midfield Overhaul at Old Trafford

United ultimately moved in a different direction, signing Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024. At the same time, Scott McTominay was sold to Napoli, while Christian Eriksen has now been released. The club is reportedly on the hunt for another central midfielder heading into the 2025/26 season.

As for Rabiot, his decision to join Marseille adds another layer to his intriguing career path. He remains a key figure in France’s midfield and continues to be one of Europe’s most consistent performers.
