Rio Ferdinand Casts Doubt on Viktor Gyökeres’ Manchester United Suitability, Urges Move to Arsenal Instead
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has expressed scepticism over the club’s reported pursuit of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres, suggesting the Swedish forward may be better suited to a move to Arsenal.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Ferdinand admitted he remains unconvinced that Gyökeres possesses the requisite attributes to thrive at Old Trafford, particularly given the physical rigours of the Premier League.
“I’ve not seen enough of him to be totally convinced,” Ferdinand confessed.
“When I’ve watched him come up against top-level opposition in the Champions League—players who can match him physically—he hasn’t stood out.”
The 27-year-old frontman has been in scintillating form for Sporting, attracting interest from several elite clubs across Europe, including both United and Arsenal. However, Ferdinand believes Manchester United should prioritise a more experienced, battle-tested forward as they rebuild under new manager Rúben Amorim.
“For Manchester United, at this moment in time, I would go for experience more than anything,” he added.
Gyökeres’ current contract at Sporting includes a €100 million release clause, though the Portuguese giants have indicated they may be willing to consider offers in the region of €70 million.
While the Swede’s power, movement, and goal-scoring prowess have lit up the Primeira Liga, Ferdinand’s comments reflect broader concerns that he may not yet be equipped to carry the attacking burden at a club of United’s stature—especially in the Premier League, where physical intensity and defensive robustness are unforgiving.
Instead, Ferdinand has subtly suggested that Arsenal, with their fluid, technically-oriented system and depth in attacking areas, could be a more conducive environment for the striker’s development and impact.
As the transfer window heats up, Gyökeres’ future remains uncertain—but with both Manchester United and Arsenal monitoring the situation, the final decision could significantly shape the attacking fortunes of whichever club secures his signature.
