In the aftermath of Manchester City‘s recent pre-season fixture, Pep Guardiola has offered a revealing hint regarding the future of French wonderkid Rayan Cherki, whose debut performance has sparked a mixed response from fans and pundits alike.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder, recently acquired from Olympique Lyonnais in a high-profile summer move, was handed his first minutes in City blue during a friendly match that ended in a narrow 2-1 defeat. While Rayan Cherki showcased flashes of brilliance with his close control and unpredictable flair, he also appeared to struggle with the tempo and tactical demands of Guardiola’s system.

Speaking to reporters post-match, Guardiola remained calm and encouraging about the youngster’s performance, but his words suggested the road ahead may require patience.
“Rayan has incredible talent — that’s clear,” Guardiola said. “But talent alone is not enough here. He needs time to adapt, to understand our rhythm, our structure, our demands off the ball.”
The City boss, known for being demanding yet nurturing with young talents, compared Cherki’s adaptation process to that of former young signings like Phil Foden and Julian Álvarez, both of whom initially had limited minutes before blossoming under Guardiola’s guidance.
“We’ve seen this before. Even top players take time to understand what we ask. It’s not about today — it’s about the long-term,” Guardiola added. “If Rayan keeps working the way he is in training, he will surprise many people.”
Cherki’s debut was not without highlights. He drew fouls in dangerous areas, attempted several daring through balls, and linked well with full-backs on overlapping runs. However, he lost possession frequently and was often caught out of position when City transitioned from attack to defense — aspects Guardiola will undoubtedly seek to refine.

Sources close to the club indicate that the coaching staff is already working on a tailored development plan for Cherki, possibly mirroring the patient integration process City has used with other young stars. There is also speculation he could be gradually introduced through domestic cup fixtures or cameo appearances in the Premier League before earning regular starts.
For Cherki, hailed in France as a generational talent, the move to Manchester City represents both an immense opportunity and a formidable challenge. But if Guardiola’s track record is anything to go by, the Spaniard may once again be the perfect architect to unlock the full potential of a raw but gifted young player.
As the season approaches, all eyes will be on how quickly — and how well — Rayan Cherki can carve his place in one of the world’s most competitive squads.
