Manchester United and Ruben Amorim are gearing up for a crucial summer as they look to revamp the squad, with player exits playing a significant role in paving the way for new signings. Strengthening the team is at the forefront of their plans, but that all depends on making room within the current roster.
It’s no secret that a number of players at Old Trafford have either underperformed or no longer meet the standards needed to compete at the top level. Amorim, stepping into this challenging role, will face some tough decisions about who stays and who needs to go.
One of those tough calls could involve goalkeeper Andre Onana. The former Inter Milan keeper was left out of the squad for United’s last Premier League match of the season. A decision that sparked speculation about his future under Amorim. Onana came in with high hopes, brought in to fill the shoes of long-time keeper David de Gea, but his performances have been hit or miss since arriving in England.
Reports from the Portuguese outlet A Bola suggest that Amorim is keen to bring in a new goalkeeper and has set his sights on FC Porto’s Diogo Costa. The Portuguese international is viewed as a perfect fit for United’s long-term vision, even though he’s currently sidelined with an injury that kept him out of the Club World Cup.
Costa’s contract has a €75 million release clause, but it seems Porto might be open to negotiating for a fee closer to €60 million about £51 million — a price that United could realistically afford if they manage to generate some funds through player sales.
Known for his modern goalkeeping style, Costa boasts impressive shot-stopping skills along with great composure and quality on the ball, traits that could significantly enhance United’s build-up play from the back.
However, any potential move for Costa likely hinges on whether United can offload Onana during the transfer window. If a deal goes through, Costa could very well become the new number one for United.
The situation is still evolving, but it looks like changes in goal are on the horizon.
