Hervé Renard narrates why he turned down NFF

Recently, the French coach Hervé Renard disclosed that the NFF offered him a chance to become the head coach of the Super Eagles as a direct successor to Finidi George, who stepped down in May. Although the offer from the NFF was irresistible, through logical and serious thinking, Renard ended up rejecting the offer.

Renard said he spent as long as days, if not weeks, trying to weigh the possibilities of the position before reaching the decision. He stated that although the offer was good, it did not meet some of his principles and career expectations.

He said he has come across many proposals from the NFF, but none come close to being as good as this one. However, he said that he did not like it in the long run, meaning to say that money could not change his mind.

Currently, Augustine Eguavoen, an interim coach, is taking the team through the next 2025 AFCON qualifier matches against Libya; therefore, the Super Eagles are in a transition period. Eguavoen has noted that he needs a long-term deal from the NFF for him to properly take the mantle of the team if need be, as coaching this team is not an easy task.

With such an outcome, we can also understand Hervé Renard’s decision to turn down the Super Eagles job, as it serves as a good example of the challenges within the national team coaching, where the monetary propositions must always be measured against the personal and the general prerequisites. As the Super Eagles remain in this state of dysfunction, the NFF will have to address the question of how to lure the best talents while equally ensuring that those talents have the tools they need to succeed.
