Welsh AFC: Charting a Path to European Glory

Welsh football club Wrexham AFC, which is now known worldwide since Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney became its owners, is gradually moving towards the European Football Tournament. Talks to devise this route are underway with the Football Association of Wales (FAW) together with the clubs of Cardiff City, Swansea City, and Newport County.

This scheme called Prosiect Cymru (Project Wales) is to enable these clubs to compete in the Welsh League Cup. This would allow the winners of the new competition to qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League, a valuable opportunity for clubs that have been restricted in their European activity because of the English football system. Now Welsh clubs in the English leagues can only make it to Europe via the Premier League, FA Cup, and the EFL Cup, which has not been easy.

Playing in the Welsh League Cup should thus be regarded as a means through which Wrexham and similar teams increase their chances of acting as ambassadors for European football. Wales is a small country, and reaching succeeding stages garners enormous financial benefits, which could be used to develop the club and the Welsh football system. This could help in the promotion of Wales in the UEFA coefficient ranking system, which currently puts Wales in the low division in Europe.

More funding would then be made available towards improving all tiers of Welsh football. Pushing for a return to European football is not simply wishful thinking on the part of Wrexham but a realistic potential that would alter the perspective of Welsh football. This project is possible only solely with the support of FAW and UEFA, which, in turn, may open a brand-new horizon for the Welsh clubs playing in England.
