Bruno Fernandes Opens Up on Manchester United Future and Criticism

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has revealed that he held discussions with the club over a potential exit, confirming that he received an offer to leave before deciding to stay at Old Trafford. The Portuguese midfielder, who remains one of United’s key players, also addressed criticism about his performances and wage structure, while responding to former club legend Roy Keane’s recent comments.

Fernandes Considered Summer Exit

Fernandes admitted that he sat down with the club hierarchy to clarify his role and future at United. While he had an offer to leave, the club expressed their desire to keep him as part of their long-term plans.

“I sat with the club because I had an offer to leave,” Fernandes revealed. “We talked about the possibility of me leaving or staying. They said what they wanted from me. I asked if they see me as part of the future of the club or not. I thought that we could be successful.”

The 29-year-old has been a pivotal figure since arriving from Sporting CP in January 2020, contributing 79 goals and 65 assists in 232 appearances across all competitions. His leadership and creative influence in midfield have been crucial, but inconsistency within the team has led to questions about his future.

Responding to Criticism Over Contract and Performances

Fernandes also addressed external criticism regarding his performances and salary, particularly from pundits and fans questioning whether he has justified his wages.

“I don’t think any player likes to hear criticism that you’re not good enough or that you’re overpaid,” he said. “Everyone has their own contract. The club agrees to do the contracts. It’s about yourself proving that you can be important for the club. You can’t relax.”

Despite United’s struggles this season, Fernandes has remained one of their most productive players. In the 2023/24 campaign, he has registered 11 goals and 8 assists in 38 appearances across all competitions, maintaining his influence in Erik ten Hag’s system.

Respect for Roy Keane Amid Criticism

Former United captain Roy Keane has been vocal about the team’s performances, often criticizing players, including Fernandes, for their leadership and consistency. However, the Portuguese midfielder remains unfazed and respectful toward Keane’s opinions.

“No, everyone has an opinion and that’s fine. I can’t change the opinions of people. I try to do the best I can for the club,” Fernandes stated. “Keane was an amazing captain, one of the best for the club. He’s massively respected by everyone, and he has all my respect.”

What’s Next for Fernandes?

With two years left on his contract, Fernandes remains an integral part of Manchester United’s midfield, but his future will likely depend on the club’s ability to challenge for major honors. His leadership and creativity will be key as United push for a strong finish in both the Premier League and FA Cup, aiming to secure Champions League football for next season.

For now, Fernandes has made his stance clear—he remains committed to United, but he expects the club to match his ambitions. Whether United can deliver on that remains to be seen.
