Antony Reveals the Key thing Behind His Improved Form in Spain—Something He Couldn’t Find in England

Manchester United loanee thriving in La Liga with renewed confidence

Manchester United winger Antony has credited the warm and sunny climate in Spain as a key factor behind his improved performances since joining Real Betis on loan. The Brazilian, who struggled to justify his hefty price tag at Old Trafford, appears to have rediscovered his form in La Liga, registering four goals and four assists in 10 appearances for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

The 24-year-old was keen to emphasize the impact of his surroundings on his mental and physical well-being, contrasting the sunny conditions in Seville with the often gloomy and overcast weather in Manchester. Speaking to local media, he said (via Tribal Football):

“The city has played a big role as well. It’s much better here, and I feel great. The sun makes a huge difference. Every day at noon, you wake up feeling good. I go to sleep smiling, and that’s the most important thing for me.”

Struggles at Manchester United

Antony’s time at Manchester United has been underwhelming, to say the least. Signed from Ajax for a staggering £85 million in the summer of 2023, he arrived with high expectations, having been a key figure under Erik ten Hag in the Eredivisie. However, his numbers at United have failed to reflect his price tag. In 96 appearances, the Brazilian has managed just 12 goals and five assists, leading to widespread criticism over his inconsistency and lack of end product.

The winger struggled to adapt to the intensity of the Premier League, with his predictable cutting-inside movement often nullified by defenders. His lack of versatility and decision-making were also highlighted as major concerns, leading to his eventual exit from the starting XI and a loan move to Betis in January 2025.

Rebirth in La Liga

Since arriving at Betis, Antony has looked like a different player. The change in scenery, along with Pellegrini’s attacking setup, has given him the freedom to express himself. Unlike at United, where he was often isolated on the right wing, Betis’ fluid attacking system allows him to interchange positions with Nabil Fekir and Ayoze Pérez, making him more difficult to mark.

His four goals and four assists in just 10 games already match or surpass what he managed in an entire season at Manchester United, reflecting a clear improvement in confidence and effectiveness.

Betis’ European Aspirations

Antony’s contributions have been crucial in Betis’ push for European qualification. The Andalusian club currently sits sixth in La Liga, battling with the likes of Villarreal and Athletic Club for a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa League.

The club is reportedly considering making his loan move permanent, depending on United’s asking price. If Antony continues to deliver at this level, Betis could be tempted to negotiate a deal, though United may also see this as an opportunity to recoup part of their initial investment.

What Next for Antony?

With his Manchester United future uncertain, Antony’s resurgence at Betis raises an important question: Is his time at Old Trafford truly over, or can he return as a more complete player? His struggles in England suggest that a return may not be ideal, but at 24, he still has time to prove himself at the top level.

For now, his focus remains on helping Betis secure European football, and if the sunshine in Seville continues to bring out the best in him, he may have finally found the right environment to thrive.
