Arsenal’s Premier League campaign kicked off with a blockbuster fixture against Manchester United – but the performance of one star left supporters in disbelief.
Mikel Arteta handed competitive debuts to Viktor Gyökeres, chosen ahead of Kai Havertz in attack, and Martín Zubimendi, who slotted into midfield. The Gunners struck first when Declan Rice’s corner unsettled Altay Bayındır and new signing Riccardo Calafiori reacted quickest to head home.
Despite that bright start, Arsenal looked uncharacteristically shaky, especially in defence, and fans singled out William Saliba for criticism.
Fans unimpressed with Saliba’s display

United’s forward duo Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo caused problems throughout the opening half, exposing gaps in Arsenal’s back line. Saliba – normally a picture of calmness – struggled to impose himself, and frustrated supporters made their feelings known on social media.
One fan fumed: “Saliba is a complete mess in this game. Get him off. Going to cost us a goal.”
Another added: “Man, Saliba is so off his game today.”
Others were more measured but still concerned, with one comment reading: “Saliba needs to chill, man.”
The French defender wasn’t the only one under the spotlight, though. Some fans felt the overall performance was below Arsenal’s usual standards, with Zubimendi’s debut also drawing negative reactions. One supporter summed it up bluntly: “Alarm bells should be ringing. Shaky at the back, poor debut for Zubimendi, and Saliba completely off it.”
Contract uncertainty lingers over Saliba
Adding to the tension is the fact that Saliba’s future remains unresolved. Talks between Arsenal and his representatives, led by Andrea Berta, have yet to deliver a new contract despite the player’s preference to stay in North London.
With reported interest from Real Madrid, fans are eager for a swift resolution. Saliba has developed into one of the best defenders in Europe under Arteta, and Arsenal know they cannot afford to lose him.
For now, though, supporters will be hoping this uncharacteristic display was just a rare off-day rather than a sign of deeper problems.
