Augustine Eguavoen narrates reason behind goal draught of Victor Boniface in Super Eagles squad

Victor Boniface, the Bayer leverkusen forward, has been under pressure for not scoring enough goals when representing the Super Eagles of Nigeria. While the player is great at club level, where he contributes over 37 goals in 43 appearances, his national form is poor, where he has scored no goals in nine appearances.

Describing this, Nigeria’s interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen recently discussed this very topic after the Super Eagles’ 1-0 win against Libya in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification fixture.

Eguavoen moved on, focusing on Boniface as a ‘clinical striker,’ but the player has been having a torrid time scoring for the nation’s team. Among the challenges that contribute to this experience are the various decision-making processes that are well illustrated by the decision-making process of the main character, Boniface. Eguavoen said although great strikers like Romario would punish half chances and loose balls, Boniface loves to dribble too much and opens his defender up, allowing him to close him down.

Eguavoen was confident that if only Boniface could add a little bit of shrewdness and speed to his decision-making upon reaching the goal area, he has the potential to score many more goals for the Super Eagles. To his credit, the coach intends to sit down with Boniface and discuss with him and attempt to lessen this barrier in order to get the forward back on track.

Both fans and critics believe that with good management and the necessary changes, Boniface has a real potential to continue his good club performance on the international level.
