Arsenal is in talks to sign a Bundesliga forward who Arsène Wenger actually tried to sign when he was 17

Arsenal are expected to be active in the summer transfer window, with Mikel Arteta keen to strengthen his attacking options ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. With Champions League football secured and the Premier League title push going down to the wire, reinforcements are now a necessity — not a luxury.

New sporting director Andrea Berta is leading the club’s recruitment plans. While signing a top-level striker remains the headline target, sources around the club suggest Berta is also pushing for the addition of a left winger. Arsenal had already planned to reinforce out wide, but Berta is said to view it as a key need, particularly for a right-footed winger who can cut inside — ideally someone offering more direct threat than Leandro Trossard or Gabriel Martinelli.

Talks have already been held with Athletic Bilbao over Nico Williams, but with no guarantees over his future, the club has started exploring other options — and one of those is Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman.

Arsenal in Ongoing Contact with Coman’s Representatives

According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Arsenal have initiated talks with Coman’s camp over a potential summer transfer. Communication between both parties is said to be ongoing, with the Gunners exploring a deal as Bayern look to offload the French winger at the end of the season.

Coman, 28, is likely to leave the Bundesliga this summer. Bayern are reportedly open to a sale and would demand around €40 million (£34 million) — a fee that reflects his experience and pedigree, even if he’s no longer viewed as indispensable in Munich.

Despite missing a number of games this season due to injury, Coman has managed 3 goals and 2 assists in 19 Bundesliga appearances. With Bayern set for a tactical reset under Vincent Kompany, Coman’s departure is considered increasingly likely.

Plettenberg stated:

“There is contact between Arsenal and Kingsley Coman’s management, with both sides in ongoing communication. Arsenal are aware that Saudi Arabia is a very appealing option for Coman, but they have expressed their interest. Coman and Bayern are expected to part ways in the summer.”

A Player Wenger Once Wanted

Kingsley Coman has long been admired in North London. In fact, Arsène Wenger publicly confirmed in 2015 that he tried to bring the then-teenage winger to Arsenal in 2014, shortly before Coman left PSG for Juventus.

“Yes, we really tried to sign Kingsley Coman in the summer of 2014. The transfer was almost completed, but he preferred Juventus,” Wenger said at the time.

Now, more than a decade later, Arsenal could finally get their man — albeit at a very different stage in his career.

Would Coman Be an Upgrade?

Coman to Arsenal

Coman has won league titles in France, Italy, and Germany, including 8 Bundesliga titles and a Champions League, where he famously scored the winning goal in the 2020 final against PSG. His record at Bayern stands at 57 goals and 65 assists in 302 matches, and he’s played in some of the biggest matches in world football.

Still, the question remains: would he be a clear upgrade on Martinelli or Trossard?

Martinelli, 22, has registered 7 goals and 5 assists across all competitions this season, while Trossard has been one of the most effective impact players, contributing 11 goals in all competitions.

Coman brings elite-level experience and tactical flexibility, but his injury record and inconsistent end product have raised some concerns. That said, in a more structured, possession-heavy system like Arteta’s, his profile could thrive — particularly as a rotational starter or experienced option in key matches.
