The debate over Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi has quietened in recent years, especially after both icons left European football for new challenges in different leagues.
Now in the twilight of their illustrious careers, their absence in European competitions, particularly the UEFA Champions League, is deeply felt. The magic they brought to those stages may never be replicated.
Although their playing days are nearing an end, the question of who boasts the greater legacy will undoubtedly spark conversations for generations to come.
Chelsea star shares his view
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Chelsea midfielder and September’s Premier League Player of the Month, Cole Palmer, was asked to choose between the two footballing legends.
“Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo? For me, it’s Lionel Messi,” he admitted.
Palmer went on to share how Messi was a childhood inspiration for him, saying, “Growing up, I wanted to be Lionel Messi.”
While the Argentine maestro is no longer a part of Barcelona, his place as one of the club’s all-time greats is unshakable. Moreover, his World Cup triumph solidifies his claim as the greatest footballer of all time.
Messi now plays for Inter Miami in the MLS, alongside former teammates Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and Luis Suarez, as he approaches the closing chapters of his career.
