Details behind Viktor Gyökeres’ delay to Arsenal have been revealed.

Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has spoken out on the ongoing transfer saga involving star striker Viktor Gyökeres, who has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal this summer.

In a direct and firm statement, Varandas confirmed that Gyökeres has not reported for pre-season training but insisted that the club remains calm and in full control of the situation.

“If they don’t want to pay Viktor’s fair market value, we’re very comfortable with that for the next three years,” Varandas told reporters, as relayed by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Arsenal, who are keen to bolster their attacking line ahead of the 2025/26 season, have reportedly held talks with Gyökeres’ camp. However, Sporting are unwilling to budge on their valuation, which is believed to be close to the striker’s €100 million release clause.

“This strategy is also making it more complicated for the player to leave. Nobody is above the interests of the club. Whoever they are,” Varandas added, making it clear that Sporting will not tolerate any pressure from external forces or the player himself.

“We’re calm. Everything will be resolved with the market closing, a hefty fine, and an apology to the group.”

Gyökeres, 26, had a sensational debut season with Sporting in 2023/24, scoring 43 goals in all competitions and 54 goals and 12 assists in 2024/25 season . His explosive form has attracted interest from several top clubs across Europe, but Arsenal appear to be leading the race.

Despite the mounting tension, Varandas’ message suggests that unless the Gunners meet Sporting’s valuation, Gyökeres may remain in Lisbon for at least another season.

The standoff continues as the summer transfer window heats up — and all eyes will now be on Arsenal’s next move.
