Onana Fires Back at Matic Ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League Clash with Lyon

Onana vs Matic: The War of Words Before Europa League Showdown

Tensions are escalating ahead of Manchester United’s much-anticipated Europa League quarter-final clash with Lyon. The rivalry has intensified after Nemanja Matic, now playing for Lyon, fired a harsh criticism at United’s goalkeeper, Andre Onana, calling him one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history. But Onana wasn’t going to let that slide.

Matic’s Criticism of Onana: ‘One of the Worst Goalkeepers in United’s History’

The war of words began when Onana confidently stated that Manchester United were “way better” than Lyon and expressed his belief that they would triumph in the upcoming match. Matic, who previously played for United, hit back by questioning Onana’s credibility, saying:

“To make such statements, you need courage. I respect everyone, but if you’re one of the worst goalkeepers in United’s history, you need to be careful about what you say. If legends like David de Gea, Peter Schmeichel, or Edwin van der Sar made such comments, I’d think twice. But if you’re statistically among the worst in the club’s modern era, you need to prove yourself first.”

Matic’s comment clearly stung Onana, who wasn’t going to let the former Red Devil’s jibe go unanswered.

Onana Responds with a Trophy Jibe

Onana took to social media to respond to Matic’s harsh words. He posted:

“I would never disrespect another club. We know tomorrow will be tough against a strong opponent, and we’re focused on delivering a performance that makes our fans proud. At least I’ve won trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.”

With this remark, Onana not only defended himself but also reminded Matic of the trophies he’s lifted with Manchester United, a point Matic couldn’t match.

The Build-Up to the Europa League Clash

As both teams prepare for the first leg of their Europa League fixture on Thursday, the match promises to be more than just a footballing encounter—it’s set to be a battle of egos. Onana and Matic’s exchange has only added to the drama, making this quarter-final one to watch.

After the showdown with Lyon, United will return to Premier League action on April 13, facing Newcastle United at St. James’.

Onana is a top Goalkeeper but it’s difficult for a goalkeeper to stand out when the team is under performing.
