Former Chelsea star Joe Cole has advised Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to consider dropping Leandro Trossard for the upcoming matches against Inter Milan and Chelsea. Cole expressed concern over Trossard’s recent form, suggesting that the Belgian international didn’t perform at his best in Arsenal’s latest Premier League clash against Newcastle United.
Arsenal suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Saturday, with Alexander Isak scoring the only goal of the game in the first half. The defeat has raised questions about Arsenal’s title chances, with some pundits—including Cole—starting to reassess their expectations for Arteta’s squad this season.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Cole praised Newcastle’s performance, saying, “I thought Newcastle were absolutely brilliant today. They were great on the ball and off it. This is a season-turning result for them.”
The former England international admitted he had previously backed Arsenal as title contenders but is now questioning that view. “A lot of people, myself included, tipped Arsenal for the league, but I’m second-guessing that now after what I saw today,” Cole added. “They could find themselves ten points adrift if they’re not careful.”
Reflecting on Trossard’s performance, Cole acknowledged the player’s talent but hinted that changes might be necessary to keep Arsenal in the race. “Trossard was off it today. He’s a fantastic player, but I’m sure Mikel will make changes,” Cole concluded.
