Man United Fans Have Already Made Up Their Minds on Senne Lammens After Debut vs Sunderland
It took just one half of football for Manchester United fans to fall in love with new signing Senne Lammens.
The Belgian goalkeeper, who joined from Royal Antwerp for £18.2 million on deadline day, was handed his first start by Ruben Amorim in Saturday’s clash against newly-promoted Sunderland at Old Trafford. Despite questions over team selection in recent weeks, Amorim stood firm in his decision to rotate.
“It’s rotation. Everybody has to be ready to play,” the under-fire United boss said before kick-off. “We need to win this game. Every opponent is different, so we try to find the best characteristics to win each match.”
Calm, Confident — and Already a Fan Favourite
Lammens was picked ahead of Altay Bayındır, and he wasted no time justifying that call. Composed with the ball at his feet and fearless when claiming crosses, the 22-year-old immediately brought a sense of calm to United’s backline.
His performances in training had already caught attention behind the scenes. Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton recently praised the newcomer on the Training Ground Guru podcast:
“He’s got a strong personality. His fundamentals are excellent. I told him after just a couple of sessions — he’s been very impressive.”
And it’s not just talk. Last season in the Belgian Pro League, Lammens was one of the standout performers — keeping seven clean sheets in 30 games, ranking first for total saves (173) and posting an impressive 77.4% save percentage.
Passing Like a Playmaker
What really stunned United fans, however, was his distribution. More than once, he launched pinpoint long passes straight to Benjamin Šeško and Bryan Mbeumo, triggering counter-attacks from deep — something Old Trafford hasn’t seen from a goalkeeper in a long time.
Fan Reactions at Half-Time
Social media exploded with early verdicts:
“Senne Lammens is changing our lives already and it’s only been 45 minutes.”
“Don’t think I’m not noticing your long passing to Šeško and Mbeumo. You have my attention.”
“Best first half I’ve seen at Old Trafford in a long time. Not perfect, but signs of improvement. Really like the look of Lammens commands his box really well.”
If this debut is any indication, Manchester United may have just secured their next long-term No.1 and the fans are already fully on board.
