Chelsea Coach Enzo Maresca Identifies Key Transfer Market Priority
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has admitted that the ongoing transfer window has affected his squad’s performance, with some players distracted by potential moves. He believes this lack of focus has impacted results, not just for Chelsea but for clubs across the world.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s clash with West Ham United, Maresca acknowledged the mental toll on players linked with transfers, stating via Football London:
“100%. Not only us but all the teams. In the end, they are human beings. Even if they say, ‘No, I am professional, I am focused,’ if they are talking to other clubs, then they are probably not focused 100%.”
He also pointed out that injuries, particularly the absence of Wesley Fofana, have affected the team. However, he remains optimistic, emphasizing that Chelsea is still creating chances and playing well, despite struggling inside the box.
Chelsea’s form has dipped significantly, winning just one of their last five league matches. They have dropped from second to sixth place and now sit 13 points behind league leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.
Maresca Hints at Goalkeeper Change for West Ham Clash
Another key concern for Maresca is Robert Sánchez’s form. The Chelsea boss suggested that the goalkeeper’s starting position is uncertain for the upcoming West Ham match, stating:
“The decision, we have two or three days. The good thing is any decision I take, I feel good because every time Filip [Jorgensen] has played since we started, he has done well. Filip or Robert, we will see.”
Sánchez, who was signed from Brighton in 2023, was initially replaced by Djorde Petrovic last season but regained his spot under Maresca. However, his five errors leading to goals this season—the most by any Premier League goalkeeper—have raised doubts about his reliability.
With Chelsea struggling to maintain consistency, Maresca might need to make changes to turn things around as the race for European qualification intensifies.
