Midfielder Set for Talks With Barcelona Director on his future.

Barcelona midfielder Oriol Romeu is reportedly set for crucial talks with the club’s sporting director Deco as uncertainty looms over his future at the Camp Nou. The experienced Spaniard, now 33, is eager to gain clarity regarding his role in new head coach Hansi Flick’s plans for the upcoming 2025–26 season.

Romeu returned to Barcelona following a loan spell at Girona during the 2024–25 campaign. However, with just one year remaining on the three-year deal he signed upon his return to the Catalan giants in the summer of 2023, his long-term role remains uncertain.

According to Mundo Deportivo (via Barça Universal), Romeu senses that he may not feature prominently under Flick and is keen to resolve the matter before preseason preparations begin.

The veteran midfielder initially joined Barcelona as a cost-effective option to provide depth and defensive stability in midfield. However, the emergence of younger talent and tactical evolution under Flick may now limit Romeu’s opportunities in the squad.

During his absence, Barcelona experimented with several players in the double-pivot system a tactical preference of the new manager. Marc Casado, Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, and even Eric García have been utilized in deep midfield roles throughout the 2024–25 season.

Given the strong competition in midfield and Barcelona’s intent to reduce wage expenditure, Romeu’s future is up in the air. The club is believed to be open to offloading fringe players as part of a broader effort to stabilize their financial situation.

Permanent exits for the likes of Clément Lenglet and Álex Valle have already been finalized, and additional departures such as Ansu Fati could follow as the club seeks greater flexibility in the transfer market.

Romeu, for his part, is not pushing for an exit but wants a clear understanding of where he stands before making a decision. A potential move either another loan or a permanent transfer could materialize if he is not assured a role in Flick’s setup.
