Phil Foden was caught laughing on the Manchester City bench shortly after Tottenham doubled their lead at the Etihad – and supporters believe they’ve figured out the reason why.
It was a first half to forget for Pep Guardiola’s side on Saturday as Spurs raced into a shock two-goal advantage. Brennan Johnson opened the scoring before new signing João Palhinha struck just before half-time, capitalising on a mistake from City’s new goalkeeper, James Trafford.
The 22-year-old, who joined City from Burnley in a £27 million deal this summer, was chosen ahead of Ederson but endured a nightmare moment that allowed Tottenham to take control.
As the cameras cut to the City bench, Jeremy Doku, Abdukodir Khusanov and Matheus Nunes looked frustrated. But in contrast, Phil Foden couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
The Reason Behind Foden’s Smile?
Many fans online believe the midfielder was reacting to Tottenham’s away end rather than City’s poor display. Spurs supporters were heard chanting: “Champions of Europe, we know what we are” – a line usually reserved for clubs with Champions League glory.
One fan joked: “Foden laughing at Spurs fans singing ‘Champions of Europe’ has killed me.”
Another added: “He couldn’t believe his ears when he heard that chant.”
Guardiola Still Has Faith in Foden
Despite a dip in form last season, Pep Guardiola remains confident that Foden can rediscover his best level this year.
“Phil is a top-class, extraordinary player,” Guardiola said before the game. “The last Premier League title we won, he was massively important and the best player in the league.
“Last season was the first time in six or seven years when things dipped a little, but that happens to every player. If he has learned from that, it will make him stronger. He’s unique, and what matters most is that he enjoys his football again.”
