Tottenham Hotspur could be set for a major late-window swoop, as they step up talks to sign Dutch star Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.
The 22-year-old, who has previously been described by Dani Olmo as a “complete player,” has attracted strong interest across Europe following his impressive spell in Germany. Manchester City were among the clubs monitoring him earlier this summer, but it is Spurs who now appear ready to make a decisive move.
Spurs push ahead in talks
According to reports, Tottenham are in discussions with Leipzig and there is growing optimism that Simons is open to joining Ange Postecoglou’s side. The Bundesliga outfit value the versatile midfielder at around £60 million, a fee Spurs may be prepared to negotiate as they look to add more creativity and energy to their attack.
Why Simons appeals to Spurs
Capable of playing as a No.10, out wide, or deeper in midfield, Simons offers tactical flexibility that would fit seamlessly into Postecoglou’s fluid system. His dribbling, vision, and ability to link midfield with attack have made him one of Europe’s most sought-after young talents.
For Tottenham, signing Simons would be a significant statement of intent — especially as he was previously linked with Manchester City, Chelsea, and several top continental clubs.
Manchester City’s stance
City were keen earlier in the summer, particularly given Pep Guardiola’s admiration for his technical skill and pressing intensity. However, with the arrivals of Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders, plus the continued development of Phil Foden and Oscar Bobb, the Premier League champions may not return with a late bid.
That could leave the door wide open for Spurs, who see Simons as a player capable of transforming their midfield options and offering immediate quality in the Premier League.
If Tottenham can get this deal over the line, it would not only strengthen their squad but also mark a significant coup over one of their title rivals.
