Miguel Merentiel broke the deadlock in the 21st minute, capitalizing on a pinpoint cross from Lautaro Blanco. However, Benfica mounted a spirited comeback. Angel Di María, facing his former club, pulled one back from the penalty spot just before the break. The Portuguese club continued to push for an equalizer and were eventually rewarded in the 84th minute when veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi headed home to level the score.
The match took a fiery turn late on, with both sides reduced to ten men. Andrea Belotti was shown a straight red card in the 72nd minute for a reckless high boot, while Jorge Figal followed in the 89th after a clumsy challenge near the sideline.
With the result, Boca Juniors and Benfica each collect a point, sitting level in second place. Bayern Munich currently top the group with three points after their opening win, while Auckland City remain at the bottom.
