Kevin De Bruyne’s highly anticipated return to the Etihad Stadium ended in heartbreak on Thursday night as the Belgian midfielder was forced off after only 25 minutes.
The Manchester City legend, now playing for Italian champions Napoli, stepped back onto familiar turf in a Champions League clash that marked his first appearance against Pep Guardiola’s side since leaving in the summer.
At 34, De Bruyne joined Antonio Conte’s Napoli after City chose not to renew his contract following a decade of incredible success. Despite rumors of a Saudi switch, the Belgian opted for Serie A, determined to prove he still belongs at the highest level.
His return, however, was overshadowed by a dramatic moment. Napoli captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo was shown a straight red card after a last-man foul on Erling Haaland, forcing Conte into a tactical reshuffle that saw De Bruyne sacrificed.
City supporters gave their former talisman a hero’s welcome, with banners reading “King Kev” and chants of his name echoing around the stadium as he left the pitch.
Speaking earlier about his City exit, De Bruyne admitted he was surprised by the club’s decision:
“I didn’t receive any offers. They just took a decision. Of course, I was a little shocked, but I have to accept it. I still feel I can perform at this level.”
While his night ended earlier than expected, one thing was clear: Kevin De Bruyne remains adored in Manchester, and his competitive fire is far from fading.
